-California is crucifying Volkswagen over excessive diesel emissions and the Environmental Protection Agency is triple-checking every diesel vehicle it can lay its hands on. “Whatever,” says Chevrolet. Here’s a heavy-duty Silverado 3500 dually with American flag decals and fat chrome exhaust stacks, designed with input from Mr. American Bad Ass himself, Kid Rock.
But while the dudebros drilling seven-inch holes in their beds are trying to roll coal—sometimes bypassing the catalysts, particulate filters, and urea injection required on newer pickups—Chevrolet isn’t craving that sort of attention. Despite the functional stacks, this Silverado’s factory emissions system and its 6.6-liter Duramax V-8 remain intact. No “Prius Repellant” black clouds here.
- -Chevy emblazoned the truck’s chrome grille with the title of Kid Rock’s hit “Born Free”, and agreed to his request to enlarge the cutout bow-tie emblem. Some restraint is shown in the delicate grayscale flag graphics on the metallic black flanks, and the truck also has tinted windows, chrome running boards, and 22-inch chrome American Force wheels. All told, it embodies patriotism without the side of ‘MURICA. Behind is a trailer pulling two Gibbs Sports Quadskis, the ATVs that retract their wheels to magically become watercraft. They’re warm-up weights for the dually’s 20,000-pound conventional tow rating.

Inside, Kid Rock went for gray leather seats with fabric inserts patterned after his acid-wash jeans, a Kicker sound system, an all-black dash, black carpeting, and “Made in Detroit” emblems for the glove box and sill plates. Kid Rock, a Michigan native, says he was inspired by the Silverado assembly workers in Flint, calling his visit “one of the coolest and most meaningful things I’ve done.” We wonder where being married to Pamela Anderson falls on that list.
