It’s always fun to do inappropriate things with vans. Just ask the Japanese, with their customized Dajiban racers. Or Ford, which took Le Mans cars and stuck transit bodies on them, creating the famed Supervans. Toyota’s Sienna R-Tuned concept isn’t quite as outlandish as the C100-based Supervan 2, which carried a Cosworth DFL V-8 engine amidships. In fact, save for the addition of a limited-slip diff, the Sienna R-Tuned’s powertrain is stock.
- -But that 266-hp family hauler managed to post a 1:27 lap time at the Streets of Willow, which compares favorably with the Porsche Cayman S, the last-generation Boxster Spyder, and the C6 Grand Sport. Toyota brought a Camaro SS out for comparison, and the V-8–powered Chevy only managed a 1:28. So it’s a respectable time for a vehicle with sporting intent, and quite impressive for, you know, a minivan.

The secret sauce comes courtesy of Toyota’s Ann Arbor Technical Center and California-based DG-Spec, who equipped the Sienna with sticky tires, performance-oriented wheels, brakes capable of holding up under track duty, double-adjustable shocks with sportier springs, and the aforementioned limited-slip. The key to posting the numbers was to carry as much speed as possible through the corners. Sure, it’s no bonkers-hairball Renault Espace F1, but it sure as hell ain’t no slouch.
