Your car’s suspension is an engineering marvel. Even the roughest-riding cars out there do an amazing job of smoothing out the bumps, cracks, dips, and potholes that riddle our roads.

-

And even if you already understand the basics of how your car’s suspension works, it’s always fascinating to get an up-close explanation.

-

That’s where Mr. Jam Handy comes in. He’s the irascible genius behind some of our favorite old-school educational films, like this one that perfectly explains how a manual transmission works, or this one that clarifies the engineering magic of a car’s differential.

Naturally, this film doesn’t cover the advanced suspension setups of today—it was produced in 1938 for Chevrolet. Indeed, the explanation stops at a coil-spring independent front suspension and leaf-spring solid axle out back. That was state-of-the-art in the 1930s, but you’ll still find it today on pickup trucks and other heavy-duty vehicles. Enjoy:
